Use MSR Mini Groundhogs for medium-to-firm ground when the shorter stake holds securely at every required point. Choose full Groundhogs where a longer, more rugged general-purpose stake is justified by firm or rocky soil or a looser pitch. Neither is a reliable default for loose sand or snow; use an anchor designed for that ground. If the stakes you already own hold the shelter correctly on your usual sites, buy nothing.
This is a researched gear comparison, not a pull-force or storm test. We reconciled current MSR product specifications, MSR’s soil-selection guide and REI’s tent-pitching advice. Campers asked in January 2026 which pegs to carry and in March 2026 whether short stakes hold in soft ground . Those are qualitative demand signals, not measured holding-power data.
Normalize package quantity before comparing checkout prices
Build the shopping list from the tent’s actual required anchor positions and your chosen spares. An illustrative list of six deployed stakes plus two spares needs eight stakes. If a listing contains six, one package is short and two packages provide twelve, leaving four beyond that list. A single-stake listing and a six-pack therefore cannot be compared by the displayed price alone.
For a mixed kit, count each length separately. Four Minis and two full Groundhogs is a six-stake composition, not a statement that every shelter needs only six anchors. Follow the shelter’s instructions and site conditions when deciding deployment, then calculate purchase quantities and carried weight from that actual list.
Check the selected variant immediately before checkout: length, count and whether cords are included as shown by the matching listing. The original weight table compares individual stakes; packaging contents can change the delivered total. No price-per-stake calculation can establish holding power in your campsite soil.
The published specification and soil map
| Decision point | Mini Groundhog | Full Groundhog | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current MSR single-stake weight | 9.40 g | 13.95 g | The Mini saves 4.55 g per stake on paper |
| Current MSR pack format | Six-stake kit | Six-stake kit | Check the actual marketplace unit count before ordering |
| Published construction | Y-beam, 7000-series aluminum | Y-beam, 7000-series aluminum | Shared material does not prove equal holding force |
| Manufacturer soil guidance | Medium to firm soil | Broad ground conditions; MSR’s guide highlights firm or rocky soil | Choose by the site and the load on each anchor |
| Loose sand or snow | No general-purpose guarantee | No general-purpose guarantee | Use a broad sand or snow anchor, or a safe alternate pitch |
The weights are from the current Mini product page and full Groundhog product page . MSR describes the full stake as 7.5 inches long and its older stake selection guide distinguishes the Mini’s firm-ground role from specialty soft-soil and sand stakes. MSR does not publish a comparable pullout-force test for these two current kits, so this table makes no percentage-strength claim.
A six-point kit calculation, not a pitch prescription
Suppose your shelter instructions require six stake positions, and the ground at the intended site accepts either model. Using MSR’s current per-stake weights, the hardware totals are:
| Six required positions | Published stake weight only | Difference from six full stakes |
|---|---|---|
| Six full Groundhogs | 6 × 13.95 = 83.70 g | Baseline |
| Six Mini Groundhogs | 6 × 9.40 = 56.40 g | 27.30 g lighter |
| Two full plus four Mini | (2 × 13.95) + (4 × 9.40) = 65.50 g | 18.20 g lighter |
This arithmetic excludes pull cords, storage bag, spares and any other anchor type. Two full plus four Mini is an example for a site with firmer ground at four positions and more demanding ground at two; it is not a universal assignment of “strong corners.” Shelter geometry, wind direction, guyline angle and local soil can change which points need what. Follow the tent maker’s required stake count and pitch instructions first. A 27.30 g paper saving is a poor trade if any essential anchor pulls out.
Before a trip, identify each required corner, vestibule and guyline point. Test the ground at the actual site and inspect every anchor after tensioning. REI’s tent setup guidance recommends driving stakes fully, carrying spares and using sand or snow anchors in those environments. Its instructions also explain why stabilizing guylines matter. A full Groundhog is not a substitute for a purpose-built sand stake in loose beach sand; MSR’s own guide points to its broader Blizzard or Cyclone designs for soft conditions.
The practical buying decision
- Pack Mini: your shelter is properly anchored on medium-to-firm ground and every required point passes a real on-site pull check.
- Pack full: your pitches are mixed or firm and rocky, or you want MSR’s longer all-purpose stake at selected higher-demand points. Test fit rather than assuming extra length cures all soil problems.
- Pack a specialist anchor: loose sand, snow or very soft ground makes either standard Groundhog inappropriate as the sole plan. A different campsite or safe alternate anchor may be necessary.
- Buy nothing: the current stakes meet the shelter’s instructions and hold at your usual sites. Do not purchase two complete six-packs just to save a few grams in a theoretical mix.
Our CORE instant tent review covers a large car-camping shelter with a very different packed-weight priority. Match the stake choice to your own tent’s required points, not the product name on another person’s kit. The Coleman Sundome review and Coleman Skydome review also distinguish quick-pitch design from the need for proper staking.
Search Amazon for the MSR 05807 full Groundhog six-pack or view a single MSR Mini Groundhog on Amazon. The latter listing is for one stake, while MSR also makes a six-stake Mini kit. The full-size search is intentional: a direct listing returned a title that mixed “Mini” with full-size model 05807 during verification, so we will not assert an exact ASIN for that offer. Confirm model, length, quantity, seller, return terms and destination region before ordering. The manufacturer’s U.S. pages showed waitlist status during review; we do not treat that as proof of Amazon stock.

We calculated a transparent six-position weight example from published single-stake weights. We did not measure holding force, compare prices or pitch a tent.
