A kit that fits the trip
Camping Kit List helps U.S. campers choose shelter, sleeping equipment, cooking gear, lighting, water treatment, food storage and first-aid supplies. We focus on the practical limits that can make a plausible purchase unsuitable for a particular trip.
Start with a measurement
Use the bed-layout worksheet to compare a measured tent interior with your actual mattresses. Our equipment reviews apply the same approach to less obvious constraints: a cot frame versus its sleeping deck, cooler ventilation versus its case footprint, and battery capacity versus the energy required by a trip.
These calculations are original editorial analysis, not field-test results. The inputs, assumptions and limits remain visible so you can check whether the result applies to your equipment.
How we research
We compare exact product specifications, manufacturer instructions and relevant public safety guidance. A model name, market, size or generation can change the dimensions, included parts and operating limits, so those details matter more than a brand reputation.
Our reviews are documentary research unless an article presents evidence of firsthand testing. A manufacturer temperature, runtime, load or capacity figure is not our own measurement. We explain its stated conditions and avoid promising comfort, weather protection or performance that the evidence does not establish.
Checklists and comparisons help you apply those limits to your tent, packing space, planned conditions and access to help. They do not replace product instructions, current land-manager rules or a safety plan appropriate to the trip.
